Capital of Russian Riviera Celebrates Olympic Bid with Lights and Colors of Sochi 2014 in Advance of IOC Evaluation Commission Visit
Snow in Krasnaya Polyana and sun on the coast to greet visitors next week
Sochi, Russia, February 17, 2007 Sochi has been overrun with Olympic fever just one day before the International Olympic Committees Evaluation Commission is set to visit, shining late into the night in a celebration of light and color, demonstrating the universal support for the citys bid to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Local initiatives in support of the bid have sprung up over the last several months, spurring the residents on and building anticipation for the IOCs arrival to the sunny city by the sea next week. 2014 trees have been decorated along Sochis promenades and roadways with colored lights, greeting everyone arriving into the city with a festive welcome. More than 100 city buses have been decorated with the Sochi 2014 logo and Sochi 2014 banners and billboards line the streets.
The Sochi 2014 bid has also launched its own initiative to sound the local community as to their ideas and concerns about the citys plans to host the Games. 65 yellow suggestion boxes have been scattered throughout Sochi and have already collected over 1,200 suggestions.
Listening to the local community and acting on their input has been a key idea leading Sochis bid, accounting for the over 86% of the local population that already support Sochi 2014. The Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Herman Gref, promised the inhabitants of Sochi earlier this week that all of their concerns about development will be taken to heart and their interests to come first.
Chairman of the Sochi Bank and City Council member Yuri Bondarenko said: "As a local resident and businessman, I am proud to support Sochi's efforts to host the Games. Our local economy has already seen the benefits of increased awareness of our fabulous city, and we welcome the Games to Sochi with open arms. Everyone here is caught up in the excitement and is eagerly awaiting the Evaluation Commissions visit.
The balmy winter temperature of 7 degrees Celsius will welcome the IOCs Evaluation Commission in Sochi tomorrow, belying the snow covering on Krasnaya Polyana that already reaches 3 meters. The skiing conditions are optimal and the sun is shining, promising ideal conditions for the IOC's Evaluation Commission visit.
