| | (ATR) While reports from Sochi remain uncertain over the circumstances of an avalanche that killed a 10-year old, the Sochi 2014 bid has released a statement vowing adopt any lessons to be learned from the accident Sunday.
The avalanche happened at Krasnaya Polyana, one of the ski venues planned for the Olympic bid.
The Associated Press says it received confirmation that the youngster was swept away while aboard a ski lift, his father watching as the boy disappeared.
Other reports have said the accident occurred 500 meters away from the piste and that other skiers went missing.
But as of Monday, it is uncertain whether other persons have been lost in the avalanche.
Russian news agency Itar-Tass reported that a team of 70 people were engaged in the rescue effort after eyewitnesses claimed they saw four skiers in the area of the avalanche.
However, the Interior Ministry and Ministry of Emergency Situations said Monday that no other missing people have been reported in connection with the avalanche.
Monday’s press release from Sochi 2014 confirms one fatality and rules out any other casualties.
“The resorts around Krasnaya Polyana have a very good track record for skiers’ safety and avalanche management," says the statement.
"Avalanches are hazards that affect all ski resorts, but if there are lessons to be learnt from investigations into this accident, we will certainly adopt them as an integral part of Sochi
2014’s plans to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as the safety of supporters and competitors is of paramount importance."
The avalanche took place in a ski area operated by Alpika-Service Company, which was embroiled in a shutdown of one of its lifts in January, allegedly over safety concerns.
Warnings had been issued Sunday about a possible avalanche in the area, reportedly through alerts via mobile phones and radio stations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a regular skiier on the slopes of Krasnaya Polyana and has a holiday home in Sochi. He recently skied at Psekhako Ridge and met with the IOC commission during their four-day inspection (Feb. 20-23) to demonstrate the government''s unequivocal support for Sochi''s Olympics bid.
The IOC inspection team also visited Psekhako Ridge, proposed site for biathlon, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. Members of the commission later surveyed Roza Khutor, the ski resort earmarked to stage the alpine skiing events and snowboarding for a 2014 Games.
The IOC inspection team heads to Salzburg, Austria, next week, rounding off its visits to each of the three candidate cities vying for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The host city will be announced at an IOC session in Guatemala on July 4.
