Madrid welcomes the America’s Cup

Madrid, March 14th 2007

Before reaching its final destination, Valencia, where the ultimate stages of the 32nd America’s Cup will take place, the "One Hundred Guineas Cup" visited Madrid as the last stop of the “Road to Valencia” promotional tour.

Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Mayor of Madrid, welcomed the oldest sporting trophy in the world and stated that the 32nd edition of this competition represents “a reason of encouragement and confidence for Madrid, as it clearly shows that the Spanish cities are completely suitable to organize international sport events with the maximum professionalism and warmth”.

Ruiz-Gallardon also praised Valencia for its resounding organizing success after being awarded the responsibility of hosting this years’ America’s Cup. “Their success means an enormous incentive for Madrid in our challenge to organize the 2016 Olympic Games”, he said.

The America’s Cup decisive phase begins on April 3rd, when all 12 America’s Cup teams will race together for the last time before the challengers start their battle for the Louis Vuitton Cup.
