Roger Bannister and the London 2012 Olympic Torch, July 10, 2012
(ATR) Roger Bannister is remembered as the first to run the mile in less than four minutes, a historic feat honored during the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2012 Olympics.

After an overnight stop in Oxford, the relay began the morning of July 10 at the track where Bannister set the record in 1954. Bannister, then 82, was the star of the ceremony, holding aloft the first lighted torch of the day.

Bannister retired from running to pursue a distinguished career as a neurologist, living and teaching in Oxford until his death March 3 at age 88.

Here are some photos of the event from ATR Editor Ed Hula.
