  • Erzurum, Turkey to host World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event 2020

    07/21/20

The World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event 2020 will be held in Erzurum, Turkey between 5–12 December 2020. This will be the first international curling event held in Turkey since 2012, when Erzurum hosted both the European Curling Championships 2012 C-Division and the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2012.

This is the second ever World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event, after the championship's debut in Scotland in December 2019 and will see four teams qualify for the expanded 24-team World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2021.

The competition will be held in the Erzurum Curling Venue, a 1000 capacity dedicated curling facility used for all of the Turkish Curling Association's team training and national events.

World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness said: "We are happy to be returning to Turkey for the first time in eight years. This event will see four of our member associations qualify for the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2021, where eight of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 mixed doubles places are on the line.

"It is an exciting time for our youngest Olympic discipline and I'm sure the Turkish Curling Association will put on a first-class event for our athletes and spectators."

Turkish Curling Federation President, Dr. Kenan Sebin, on behalf of the Organising Committee, said: "We are honoured to host the World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event 2020 in Erzurum and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our amazing winter city and historical place. We invite everyone to join the magic of Erzurum and we wish the athletes good luck and success in this event."

The World Curling Federation and the Turkish Curling Association are monitoring the guidelines from the Turkish Government and international health authorities with regards to the ongoing situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19). The championships are expected to go ahead without disruption; however, the health and safety of the athletes, spectators and event staff is of the utmost importance. Evaluations on the viability of running the championship will continue over the next few months as the global situation develops.

The World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event is open to Member Associations not already qualified for the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2021.
