  • Audit says Funds Diverted by City

(ATR) - An audit of the Beijing municipal government sports bureau apparently has revealed that $16 million meant for the 2008 Olympics has been used for staff apartments, employee bonuses and loans to companies.

The audit was not conducted on the books of BOCOG, the Olympic organizing committee, a separate organization. However, the municipal sports bureau and its staff are key players in the staging of the Games.

A spokesman for BOCOG issued a statement that all spending by the organizing committee is in accordance with International Olympic Committee standards.
