  • Taekwondo Federation Chooses Reform

Dr. Chong-won Choue, new president of the World Taekwondo Federation
(ATR) South Korean Chong-won Choue has won a convincing election for a four-year term as president of the world Taekwondo Federation. Choue defeated Sun-jae Park of Italy 122-10 at the WTF general assembly on the eve of the world championships in Madrid.

Park, president of the Italian federation for the sport and Sang Lee, ex-president of the U.S. national governing body tried to block the election by seeking an injunction last month in a South Korean court.

The election was the first for a full slate of officers since founding president Un Yong Kim resigned last year in the midst of legal difficulties. Choue was elected WTF president on an interim basis following Kimâ??s resignation, serving the remaining year left in the term.

Kim is currently serving the final months of a two-year prison term for bribery and embezzlement, some of the charges involving WTF funds.

Among the three vice presidents elected in Madrid is Nat Indrapana, IOC member from Thailand. A new 20-member executive board was also chosen by the delegates.

Secretary general Dong-hoo Moon was asked to remain in the post for the next four years.

A package of reforms for taekwondo passed at the general assembly covering a range of issues, from rules of the sport to administrative and financial transparency.

â??Our reform process should not stop and it should continue even after taekwondo is included as a permanent Olympic sport, as we strongly believe that our efforts will contribute not only to the development of taekwondo, but also the global Olympic movement,â? Choue said in a statement.
