(ATR) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says India would like to launch a bid for the 2016 Olympics.
Speaking at a university convocation in Manipur, Singh said the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi should serve as a springboard for an Olympic bid. But Singh did not say which city in India should make a bid.
Indian officials have made frequent references to an interest in bidding for the Olympics since winning the vote for the Commonwealth Games last year.
The campaign for 2016 will begin informally after the July 6 2005 vote by the International Olympic Committee for the 2012 host city. Under current IOC timetables, the decision on 2016 would take place in 2009.
