Around the Games: China, U.S. Lead Medals
(ATR) China and the U.S. remain at the top of the medal table as competition ends on day six of the Athens Olympics.
In swimming, Aaron Piersol of the U.S. was declared the winner in the 200m backstroke after his disqualification for an illegal turn was appealed.
A total of seven weightlifters have been disqualified from the Olympics by the International Weightlifting Federation with the announcement of two more suspensions late today. The IWF has a policy of testing all athletes prior to competition.
Even as the two biggest days of the competition approach, the IOC has dropped its Friday morning meeting of the Athens Coordination Commission for lack of business. Thursday?s meeting lasted 8 minutes.
Friday is the peak day of competition for the Games, with 29 venues in operation, including the Olympic Stadium, site of track and field for the next week.
