(ATR) As day five of the Athens Olympics closes, China remains at the top of table for gold medals with 10, an unprecedented feat, perhaps a sign of things to come with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
A spokesman for the Chinese team tells Around the Rings.com the success only reflects the early stages of competition that events in which the U.S. and Russia are medal favorites are still ahead.
At the same time, the Chinese spokesman says the government has increased support for sport in advance of the Beijing Olympics. China is sending a record number of 397 athletes to Athens.
Leading the overall medal count is the U.S. with 26 medals, followed by China at 20. Russia was third, followed by Australia and Japan.
