Athens Makes Quick Blackout Recovery
(ATR) - Power has been restored to nearly all of Athens after a blackout that struck the city in the midst of a heatwave. Surging demand for air conditioning, with Athens temperatures reaching the 40c mark, is one possible culprit for the outage.
Power began to be restored only 20 minutes after the blackout, but it was widespread enough to cause traffic snarls and halt service on the Metro. Outages were experienced as far as 150 miles from Athens.
Government officials say five new power substations coming on-line in time for the Athens Olympics should help assure reliable supplies of electricity in August.
