US Trials for Swimming and Track
(ATR) - The U.S. team in track and field for Athens will not include Marion Jones defending her Olympic title in the 100 meters. She failed to qualify in the U.S. trials at Sacramento, California, but could make the team for Athens later this week in the long jump and 200 meters. Meanwhile, the six U.S. athletes with drug charges hanging over them face qualifying for their events in the coming days.
In southern California, the U.S. swimming trials in Long Beach are producing world record results - and stoking the hype around 19 year-old Michael Phelps. The phenom from Baltimore has qualified so far in three of six individual events in his bid to match Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven Olympic gold medals. The swimming trials end July 14.
