Athens Launches Security Measures
(ATR) - The Greek government has begun deployment of troops and police around Athens. Ministry of Public Order George Voulgarakis says the first wave will involve a force of 11,000; up to 70,000 soldiers, police and coast guard officers will be on duty once the Games begin.
The forces being deployed this week will be on guard at transportation hubs and venues. Voulgarakis says Athens' main complex of venues, the Athens Olympic Sports Park, won't be sealed until early August, due to the ongoing construction.
The minister says the command and control system being installed for the Games is gradually coming on line and should be fully operational by mid-month
