  • Olympics Star Kostelic Wins Laureus Honor


    (ATR) Croatian ski Janica Kostelic is the winner of the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, presented Monday night in Barcelona.
    Kostelic, who has won the most medals at the Olympics in alpine skiing, was honored along with tennis stars Roger Federer, Martina Hingis and Rafel Nadal.

    The Laureus Awards, now in their 7th edition, are sponsored by Mercedes Benz and IWC Schaffhausen.

    Other Olympians nominated with Kostelic were two gold medalists from the 2004 Athens Games: Yelena Isinbayaeva of Russia (pole vault) and Carolina Kluft of Sweden (heptathlon).

    Other Olympians up for awards included high jumper Kajsa Bergqvist of Sweden, snowboarder Shaun White of the U.S., and skier Antoine Deneraz of France.

    Former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch and Barcelona resident was among those attending, along with King Juan Carlos. As many as a dozen IOC members were expected at the ceremony, their presence not overlooked by Jaca 2014 bid leaders, who also were on hand for what is a local event for them.

    Organizers say the Laureus Awards will attract one billion TV viewers in 190 countries.
