  • Torino Ice: Olympics Preps Are Tested


    The Palavela, which opened in 1961, has been renovated for the 2006 Games. 
    (ATR) Plans for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games undergo their most intense testing this month with a series of sport events in Turin as well as the mountain venues to the west of the Olympic City.

    Torino Ice 2005 is the brand-name given to the five events ahead this year in new or renovated venues in the city. This month the Palavela arena will host European championships in short track speed skating and figure skating. At the end of the year events will be held for ice hockey and Paralympic sledge hockey.

    In the mountains, seven events will be held through the end of February, including the sliding sports, biathlon, snowboard and Nordic disciplines.
