The Callaghan Valley is the site for the Nordic events in 2010, just outside Whistler.
(ATR) A construction worker was killed in an explosion Monday during work on the road being built to the 2010 Olympics Nordic venue at Callaghan Valley.

Murrin Construction worker Gary Michael Greer, 45, was part of a blasting crew on the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation project south of Whistler.

The incident, believed to be the first death on a project for the Vancouver Olympics, is under investigation.

In a statement from VANOC, chief executive John Furlong offered his condolences.

"We are tremendously saddened by the news of the tragic accident today on the access road under construction to the Whistler Nordic Centre in the Callaghan Valley.

"The thoughts and prayers of our entire Vancouver 2010 team are with the families, friends and co-workers of the individual involved in today's tragedy," said Furlong.
