    ATR) Three of the four bid cities’ handball venues will require only temporary construction. In this installment of By the Book, Around the Rings presents a look at the venues planned by Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the sport of handball.

    Chicago
    Chicago will use separate venues for handball’s preliminaries and finals. (Chicago2016.org)

    • $3.9 million in temporary construction

    • Currently used as a convention center

    Finals

    • Chicago Arena
    • 21,700 Capacity
    • $8.8 million in temporary construction (venue also will be used for basketball and handball finals)

    • Currently used as a indoor arena
    Madrid’s handball venue is currently used as an indoor arena. (Madrid2016.es)


    Madrid

    • Madrid Arena
    • 12,000 Capacity

    • Currently used as an indoor sports hall

    Rio de Janeiro

    • OTC – Hall 4
    Rio’s OTC-Hall 4 will be located less than 5 km from the Olympic Village. (Rio 2016)

    • $9.5 million in temporary construction / $195.2 million in permanent construction (permanent cost also includes OTC-Halls 1-3 which will be used for basketball, judo, taekwondo and wrestling)

    Tokyo

    • Yoyogi National Stadium
    • 12,000 Capacity
    Tokyo will spend $15 million on its handball venue.
