    All of the four cities bidding for the 2016 Games propose media centers located within walking distance of media hotels and villages. In this installment of By the Book, Around the Rings presents a look at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and Main Press Center (MPC) for Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the 2016 Games.

    Chicago's IBC / MPC will be adjacent to the Olympic Village. (

    • Location: McCormick Place
    • Total Size: 297,300 m² - Divided into four contiguous halls(North, South, West, Lakeside Center)
    • IBC : 78,000 m² of exhibition space, 16,000 m² of meeting rooms (South Hall)
    • MPC: 65,000 m² of flexible space (North and South Halls)
    • Key Features-
        o adjacent to the Olympic Village
        o also serves as Lake Michigan Sports Complex which will host 11 Olympic and eight Paralympic sports
        o more than 500 wireless access points that can serve more than 8,000 concurrent users

    Madrid's IBC / MPC will be located in it's Exhibition Center, IFEMA. (

    • Location: IFEMA (Madrid’s Exhibition Center)
    • Total Size: 170,000 m²
    • IBC: 100,000 m²
    • MPC: 70,000 m²
    • Key Features-
        o short walk from the Media Village
        o located less than 6 km from Madrid’s Barajas Airport
        o modular design with power, fiber-optic and data network points

    Rio de Janeiro
    Rio's IBC / MPC will be within walking distance of 14 sports. (Rio 2016)

    • Location: Rio Olympic Park Precinct
    • Total Size: 140,000 m²
    • IBC: 40,000 m² of open plan and flexible studio space, 15,000 m² office and administration space
    • MPC: 55,000 m²
    • Key Features-
        o Within ten minutes walking distance of the Barra Media Village
        o within walking distance of 14 sports
        o media transport system designed to enable system-wide clean-to-clean transfers between the IBC / MPC and venues

    Tokyo's automated guideway transit service is directly connected to the IBC / MPC. (

    • Location: Tokyo Big Sight
    • Total Size: 145,000 m²
    • IBC: 100,000 m² (including common space with the MPC)
    • MPC: 45,000 m² (exclusively used for MPC)
    • Key Features-
        o Within walking distance of several of the media hotels
        o Also serves as the venue for fencing, wrestling and taekwondo
        o The automated guideway transit service is directly linked to IBC / MPC
