  • By the Book: 2016 Olympic Village

    Olympic Villages with room for more than 17,000 beds are included in the plans for the 2016 Olympics. In this installment of By the Book, Around the Rings presents a look at the Olympic Villages for Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the 2016 Games.

    Chicago
    Chicago's Olympic Village will include 21 residential buildings. (Chicago2016.org)


    • Location: south of McCormick Place, Martin Luther King Drive on the west, and the shoreline of Lake Michigan on the east, less than 1 km from the IBC / MPC, 10-minute drive from Olympic Stadium
    • Land Size: 52 hectares
    • Village Size: 21 residential buildings, approximately 12 stories tall; 16,800 bed spaces, 16,000 athletes and officials
    • Cost: $111.4 million for temporary construction / $976.6 million for permanent construction

    Madrid
    The Olympic Village in Madrid will include additional hectares of land for lake and parklands. (Madrid 2016)


    • Location: Olympic Park, 10 km from the International Airport, 10 minutes drive from the city center, within 20 minutes of venues
    • Land Size: 46 hectares, additional 16 hectares for lake and parklands
    • Village Size: 17,800 beds, apartment blocks and semi detached houses varying from three to 15 stories, average of eight stories
    • Cost: $87.6 million for temporary construction / $1.2 billion for permanent construction

    Rio de Janeiro
    The Olympic Village in Rio will include 74 percent of apartments that have an additional single bedroom. (Rio 2016)


    • Location: Barra region, within walking distance of Rio Olympic Park, within walking distance of venue, Riocentro
    • Land Size: 75 hectares, excluding the Olympic Beach, The Olympic Village Park and the Olympic Village Training Center
    • Village Size: more than 17,700 beds with 74 percent of apartments that have an additional single bedroom
    • Cost: $139.7 million for temporary construction / $427.1 million for permanent construction

    Tokyo
    Tokyo's Olympic Village will be located within 10 minutes of competition venues. (Tokyo2016.or.jp)


    • Location: Musubi Cluster, within 10 minutes of venues, short distance from IBC / MPC
    • Land Size: 31 hectares of municipal land
    • Village Size: 17,000 beds, 16,000 for NOC requirements and an extra 1,000 space for additional officials, maximum of nine stories
    • Cost: $116 million for temporary construction / $832 million for permanent construction
