  • 2020 By the Book: Olympic Village


    All three bid cities propose one Olympic Village for the 2020 Olympics. In this installment of By the Book, Around the Rings presents a look at the Olympic Village plans of Istanbul, Madrid, and Tokyo.


    Location: Northwest of the city adjacent to the Istanbul Olympic Park Precinct.
    Land size: 72 hectare site, with a residential zone of 28 hectares.
    Village size: 17,500 beds in medium rise residential apartments with a maximum of 10 storeys in height.
    Cost: $445.9 million (USD) Total Cost / $347.6 million (USD) for permanent construction / $98.3 million (USD) for temporary construction


    Location: In the East of the city, within the Campo de la Naciones Zone and the Olympic Park Cluster
    Land size: 46 hectares, with an additional 18 hectares of parkland and training fcailities
    Village size: 17,800 beds for athletes and officials in 19 apartment blocks with an average of eight levels
    Cost: $810.9 million (USD) Total Cost / $758.9 million (USD) for permanent works / $52 million in overlay works


    • Location: Right on the waterfront on the Harumi Pier.
    • Land size: 70 hectares of water and land inside a secure perimeter. 44 hectares of land.
    • Village size: 17,000 beds, 16,000 for NOC requirements, and 1,000 extra for additional officials if required in buildings of various sizes (athletes floors would comprise the first thirteen floors even if some buildings extend higher).
    • Cost: $1. 201 billion (USD) / $1.084 billion (USD) for permanent works / $117 million (USD) for temporary works
