Elite tennis players will gather in New York this week for the US Open.
For the first time, Great Britain's Andy Murray will be the defending champion at a Grand Slam tournament. United States' Serena Williams will also vie for her second title at the US Open.
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova and Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli will not compete in the tournament. This is Sharapova's first time missing the US Open since 2008.
Matches being today and end on September 9.
ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The International Canoe Federation will stage its Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany. Competition begins on August 27 and ends on September 9.
An estimated 1,200 athletes from 90 countries will participate in the World Championships at the Wedau regatta course.
FISA World Rowing Championships

Athletes began competition in the 2013 World Rowing Championships on Sunday.
A record 74 nations entered the International Rowing Federation's competition. Events will continue in Chungju, South Korea through September 1.
The fifth Coordination Commission for the 2016 Rio Olympics will be held September 1 through September 2.
The IOC Executive Board will meet September 4 through September 5 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Buenos Aires will also host the 125th IOC Session, which begins on September 7.
Nice, France will host the 2013 Francophone Games. Events begin September 7 and end September 15.

Competition in the International Judo Federation's World Championships begins today in Rio de Janeiro, and ends on September 1.
The International Gymnastics Federation will be in Kiev, Ukraine this week for the 2013 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. Events begin on August 28 and continue through September 1.
- UCI Paracycling Road World Championships
The International Cycling Union kicks off competition in the Paracycling Road World Championships on August 29. Bai-Comeau, Canada will stage races for the World Championships through September 1.
