Japan promises the IOC unbeatable commercial potential for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games
At a press conference today Tokyo 2020 highlighted the benefits that Asia offers to the Olympic Movement, notably a promise to leverage its marketing potential to promote Olympism around the world. With just three days to go until the International Olympic Committee elects the host city for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the event also featured a surprise visit by one of Tokyo's latest and most-technology-savvy supporters, a Japanese robot named MIRATA.
During the event, Tokyo 2020 underscored the fact that Asia, the world's largest and youngest continent, offers great opportunity for the Olympic Family. IOC Member and President of both Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) Tsunekazu Takeda referred to the innovative marketing model Tokyo has proposed, and said it is a clear indication of corporate Japan's passion for supporting international sport and the Games. Tokyo's total sponsorship revenue forecast is USD 932 million.
"With guaranteed delivery and funding, our focus will be on the 'extras' which help promote Olympism worldwide," he said. Commenting on the future of the Games he said, "The Olympic Movement has taken great strides to inspire the youth of the world...to help them discover the incredible power of sport in this challenging and fast-changing era for sport. Tokyo is extremely well-positioned to continue that focus."
In Buenos Aires this week the Tokyo 2020 team has also highlighted the fact that Japan has recently reported its lowest rate of unemployment since October 2008. Japan's July 2013 figure of 3.8% reflects the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labour force. Takeda has commented that the low rate is an indication of the strength of the country's economy. Tokyo has the largest GDP of any city in the world.
Fujio Cho, President of the Japan Sports Association and Honorary Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation highlighted Tokyo's proposed marketing programme, and discussed the city's certainty in delivery and marketing success.
Cho said the Olympic Movement would benefit with Tokyo as host "Because Asia is the only continent in the world with more people living within its territory than outside. And consequently it is the largest market in the world, with billions of passionate sports fans."
Japanese Olympian Yuki Ota, double silver medallist in Fencing, participated in a lively demonstration with Tokyo 2020 supporter MIRATA. Interacting in real-time, the two exercised, stretched and performed a balance routine. Ota said, "Whether it's in our daily lives, or to teach us the joy of sports, robots will play an important role in the future."
MIRATA is a 34cm robot whose identical "brother" robot KIROBO departed for the International Space Station (ISS) from Tanegashima, Japan, on August 4.
The trip to Buenos Aires is MIRATA's first outside of Japan, and MIRATA is reported to have said he is thrilled to support the Tokyo 2020 Bid.
