    Marius Vizer (ATR)
(ATR) Within the span of one year, Marius Vizer has expanded his sphere of influence with his election as SportAccord/International Federations’ Union president.

Vizer campaigned for the post with a call for unified world championships every four years, an event that would feature world championships in every Olympic sport held within one city or country.

While the proposal has been treated dismissively by the IOC as a threat to the uniqueness of the Olympic Games, Vizer still hopes to shake things up for the benefit of the nearly 100 sports federations that are members of SportAccord / IFU.

Vizer hopes to bring changes to the commercial side of SportAccord as well, which manages the eponymously named annual convention. He wants to see the convention staged in high profile cities to gain more attention and exposure for the event.

Vizer, Romanian born, turns 57 in 2014. He has been president of the International Judo Federation for six years, but whether he will be nominated for one of the seats earmarked on the IOC for sports federations is up to IOC president Thomas Bach. Despite not being a keen supporter of Vizer’s supersized world championships, Bach nonetheless showed his trust in Vizer by naming him as a member of the coordination commission for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

    2013 ranking: 21
