(ATR) The 6,000 athletes who will compete in the Baku 2015 European Games are set to enjoy world class facilities at the Athletes Village, which has been designed to deliver the best conditions possible for competitors.

The Government and people of Azerbaijan are proud that the First European Games will be held in their country and the preparations are well underway to afford a warm welcome to athletes and officials.

The country is dedicated to making this a Games focused on athletes and in doing everything possible to ensure that the Baku 2015 European Games will set the standard for the future of the European Games.

The Athletes Village has the capacity to host up to 9,000 athletes and officials and has been designed to deliver the best conditions possible for those who will compete in 19 sports over 16 days.

The village comprises 13 buildings, 1,042 apartments, 16 different types of apartments with three to four bedrooms per apartment and a total of 7,510 beds. Azerbaijan’s experience of participating in five Summer and four Winter Olympics during its 22 years of independence has provided valuable insight into the process of creating an Athletes Village that caters for the demands of elite athletes.

Work on the development of the Athletes Village will continue as Baku 2015 makes the transition from functional area planning to operational planning, integration and testing.

As such, it is looking forward to hosting its first test events in the coming months. The European Youth Athletics Trials and the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will allow BEGOC the opportunity to put a number of its operating models and procedures into practice.

The Athletes Village will be tested with the two major test events this summer. Such early testing is unprecedented for a major multi-sport event.

Preparations to host the athletes and officials also extends to transportation which is a high priority for the organisers of the Games and all of the relevant government departments.

There is a clear understanding of the demands on athletes and the values of providing the necessary infrastructure to enable them to maximise their time in preparation for competition.

The completion of the new international airport terminal in Baku, the improvement of the entire aviation infrastructure and enhancement of flight schedules will also help to ease the burden of travel for athletes.

Athletes who want to take time out to enjoy the city of Baku will benefit from significant upgrades to the metro and bus networks taking place as part of the overall plan to maximise transportation efficiency.

The opportunity to utilise the Games to establish Azerbaijan and Baku as a genuine centre of sporting excellence has been clearly understood and the world class Athletes Village is set to be a talking point amongst athletes and officials for years to come.
