Patrick Hickey (ATR)
(ATR) The inaugural European Games is the pet project of the European Olympic Committees president.
The Irish IOC Executive Board member got the project off the ground two years ago and will be keen to ensure the first edition delivers on its promises to NOCs, federations, sponsors and broadcasters.
With a few hurdles still to cross in the final six months of fast-track preparations, the signs are looking good.
Ahead of those Games, one of Hickey’s chief responsibilities as EOC chief will be guiding the evaluation of the six candidate cities for the 2019 European Games. A decision on the host is due in May.
The 69-year-old, a trusted lieutenant of Thomas Bach, has a role to play in helping the IOC leadership implement Agenda 2020 reforms. He will also help guide preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics in his capacity as a member of Nawal El Moutawakel’s coordination commission.
