(ATR) Claudia Bokel, 39, a fencing silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics, was elected to the IOC Athletes’ Commission for an eight-year term in 2008. This year, she was elected as chair of the Commission and with that, a seat on the IOC Executive Board for the next four years as the voice for active athletes.
After retiring from competition, Bokel served as the first chair of the Athletes’ Commission of the European Olympic Committees from 2005 to 2009.
In 2013, Bokel will chair the IOC panel evaluating the five bids for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. And she serves as a member of the Evaluation Commission examining the three bids for the 2020 Olympics.
Among the issues ahead for the Athletes’ Commission is whether to revise Rule 40 in the Olympic Charter. The rule restricts commercial activities of athletes during the period of the Olympic Games.
