  • Golden 25 -- #4 Eduardo Paes/Carlos Nuzman

    Paes/Nuzman (ATR)
(ATR) Rio Mayor Paes is the energetic force behind preparations in the city for the 2016 Summer Games, now just over 18 months away.

He is but one of three government kingpins overseeing Olympic preparations, but seems to be taking a more prominent role than Rio de Janeiro state governor Luis Pizao or even Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

Construction of venues, redevelopment of the old Port District and significant expansion of public transit in time for the Games are projects the Mayor will shepherd in 2015.

Over at Rio 2016, Carlos Nuzman endures as the president of the organizing committee, which is about to kick into operational mode in 2015.

Test events are on the schedule and plans will be finalized for the Olympic torch relay. Nuzman remains the point of contact between Rio 2016 and major stakeholders such as the IOC and different levels of government in Brazil. Key lieutenants such as Sydney Levy, Mario Cilenti and Mario Andrada are handling the daily challenges.

Nuzman, though no longer on IOC member after retiring in 2012 at age 70, still could be a candidate for the presidency of the Pan American Sports Organization if Mario Vasquez Rana retires at the end of his term in 2016.
