  • Golden 25 - #13 ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg

(ATR) With PyeongChang 2018 test events looming in February and March, Gunilla Lindberg will be keen to see they are successfully delivered.

Lindberg is number 13 in the Around the Rings Golden 25 for 2016. Now in its 20th year, the survey ranks 25 individuals or events expected to have a major influence on the Olympics in the year ahead.

Lindberg says the upcoming winter is critical for PyeongChang organizers. Construction at the new Jeongseon Alpine venue was delayed by the monsoon season. One concern is the timeline for delivery of the gondola for downhill, which is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 20 just weeks before the downhill World Cup test event for the 2018 Games.

The IOC Executive Board member will also push Olympic chiefs to bring more sponsors on board after POCOG’s struggles to hit targets.

In her ANOC duties, she will help fast-track preparations for the first World Beach Games in San Diego in 2017, including designing an innovative sports program.

Lindberg, 68, will also contribute to ironing out the final wave of wrinkles in Rio 2016 preparations in her role on the IOC coordination commission.

With the IOC inspection team for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games soon to be announced, Lindberg will likely have a lead role following her experience of heading the PyeongChang 2018 watchdog.

    2015 ranking: 14
