  • Around the Rings Celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Centennial Olympic Games

July 19, 2016 (Atlanta) - Around the Rings opened its doors to host a celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the Atlanta Olympic Games. ATR’s headquarters in Atlanta were transformed into a festive atmosphere on Tuesday evening, twenty years to the day of the Opening Ceremony. Friends and colleagues gathered to reminisce, take pictures with a commemorative torch and eat some of Atlanta’s finest Bar-B-Q.

The Atlanta Games were the first and only Olympics held in the Southern United States. It gave the Capital city the opportunity to showcase itself as a vibrant metropolis that had come a long way since the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.The Games were momentous for the city, but as ATR founder and Editor Ed Hula said, the Olympics did more than put Atlanta on the world map, “The way the city came to life was electric. We’ve never seen anything like that before the Olympics or since then in Atlanta. It was really a golden moment.”

The celebration at Around the Rings was one of several being held this week in Atlanta to mark the anniversary. Atlanta beat out several major cities including Athens and Toronto to win the bid for the Games. More than ten-thousand athletes from a record 197 countries competed during the 17-day event. The Atlanta Games were the first Summer Games held in a different year from the Winter Games. Both the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year since 1924, but in 1986, the International Olympic Committee voted to separate the games, alternating them in even-numbered years beginning in 1994.

Hula recalled the growth of Around the Rings in the past 20 years. “It’s just a whole different world,” said Hula. “Twenty years ago, Around the Rings was based upon largely my radio work. What we do now is transmitted and read by people around the world and that certainly wasn’t the case 20 years ago.”
