  • USOC Update Regarding Independent Investigation Into Larry Nassar Abuse

    01/29/18

Susanne Lyons, independent member of the USOC board of directors and chair of the USAG Working Group, provided the following update regarding the independent investigation into how Larry Nassar’s abuse was able to occur:

“As previously announced, the United States Olympic Committee is launching an independent investigation into the decades-long abuse by Larry Nassar to determine what complaints were made, when, to whom, and what was done in response. The investigation will be conducted by an experienced, independent third-party organization, and will include a complete and unencumbered review of USA Gymnastics, the USOC, and all individuals associated with the organizations, including access to relevant data and documents. Kerry Perry, CEO of USAG has pledged her full cooperation, which we welcome. The results of the independent investigation will be made public.

“The USOC board established a subcommittee to lead the selection of the independent investigator. The members of the selection committee are Susanne Lyons (an independent board member and chair of the working group addressing these issues), Robert Bach (an independent board member) and Whitney Ping (a board member and athlete representative). The selection committee has begun reviewing qualifications, interviewing potential independent investigators and evaluating possible conflicts to ensure the investigator’s independence. The selection committee expects to complete its review and make a selection in the coming days, and the investigation will launch immediately.

“We are committed to ensuring a process that is independent, transparent, sensitive and accessible to those who wish to provide input to the independent investigator.”
