  • London Eyes Olympic Return

(ATR) London was the first city to host the Olympic Games three times, and officials reportedly want to make it the first to a fourth.

Preliminary discussions for a potential bid were confirmed to the Evening Standard through the head of UK Sport. The group is funded through the British government and invests in high performance sport throughout Great Britain.

Any Olympic bid from Great Britain however would have to come from the British Olympic Association, the country’s National Olympic Committee. Talks reportedly have not reached that stage yet.

“I would say if you look at where the Games have been held over recent cycles and if you were looking at where a European location would best next fit, it would be great if it [London hosting the Olympics] was 2032, but I would have thought 2036 is more likely,” Liz Nicholl, UK Sport chief executive, told the Evening Standard.

London’s expression of interest marks the first official city looking at the 2036 bid cycle, looking beyond a crowded 2032 field.

The IOC is not expected to decide a host for the 2032 Olympics until 2025, but numerous countries have already stated interest in bidding for the next available Summer Games.

Australia, Germany, India, Indonesia, and North/South Korea have publicly declared interest in bidding for the Games, while also taking concrete steps. After the successful 2018 Youth Olympic Games, Argentina has said it is considering a 2032 bid as well.

India and Indonesia have formally notified the IOC about intentions to bid for the Games to get more information on the process.

India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games, despite a litany of issues, and held off bidding for the 2024 Olympics upon recommendation from the IOC. Indonesia successfully hosted the 2018 Asian Games on short notice, drawing acclamation from sport groups despite concerns over human rights.

Brisbane, a potential Australian host city, was given a boost in the form of a completed transport study by French group Lagadere, according to a report from 9 News. The study said the area needs significant upgrades to infrastructure in order to host the Olympics, but could generate more political will for a potential Olympic bid. Australia last hosted the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney.

Seoul was designated as the official host city for the joint Korean Olympic bid for the 2032 Games. The South Korean city hosted the 1988 Olympics. Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital, is expected to be named the other host city.

North and South Korean sport officials visited Lausanne this month to speak with the IOC about future unified Korean teams and the Olympic bid.

London has a long way to go until the 2036 Olympic cycle gets underway in earnest, but has already secured key political backing. A statement from London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office suggests political leadership is already behind a potential bid, and is willing to take on long-term preparations for it.

“If there was the possibility of a London bid in that period of time, it would be a very exciting prospect that we’d be behind,” a spokesperson for Khan’s office told the Evening Standard.

Khan recently hosted the mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz to discuss “London’s 2012 Olympics legacy and best practice ahead of the Pan American Games in Lima later this year,” according to a post on Twitter
